From office building to residential building
The former VNU building in Haarlem’s Schalkwijk district, built in 1973, has been converted into a residential building comprising 162 flats and commercial premises. Two additional storeys have been built on top of the existing roof, housing 13 special ‘on-top’ flats.
During this transformation, the existing concrete structure was retained, and the flats have a floor-to-ceiling height of 3.4 metres. The new façade was fitted to this concrete structure and constructed using solid timber.
The building forms a striking, tall feature in the revitalised heart of the new ‘Schalkstad’.
For this project, Leegwater was commissioned to produce the cladding, which consists of thermally modified Frake open-joint cladding, treated with Flame Delay FXPro for fire retardancy and finished with Sansin Woodsealer.
